Apple Building Solar Array for North Carolina Data Center By: / on: 02-21-2012
Apple has announced the construction of the largest end-user solar array and non-utility fuel cell installation for its data center in North Carolina. The plans for the solar farm began as early as October of last year, after receiving a local permit to reshape its Maiden property to make room for the construction. Speculation for the purpose of the permit was ended after Apple made it public that the solar farm would be used for the data center. After completion, the solar array will span across a 100-acre 20MW facility. It is estimated to supply 42 million kWh of renewable energy per year, according to Apple's report.
"Apple is committed to pursuing energy-efficient growth by increasing our renewable energy participation to match the growing needs of our data center-through our own projects as well as partnerships with utilities and renewable energy providers," Apple said.
Apple is widely known for their dominance in the small mobile device market with products such as the iPhone, iPod, and the iPad, but has been showing a recent increase in emphasis on consumer cloud services and thus data centers. Particularly, Apple has been focusing on a goal of achieving "net zero energy" at its operational facilities. Their next step in their energy efficiency approach will be to create industry partnerships with renewable energy and utilities providers, for wider access to renewables in difficult locations.
Although Apple is applying these measures to their company facilities and data centers, it is only a matter of time before other tech giants and data centers follow suit with similar technologies. The green push for the data center industry has been going strong for many years now, which is great news for colocation providers and their clients.
